Accelerating Organizational Race Equity

A nonprofit assessment tool for building more racially equitable workplaces.

Building Blocks for Change (BB4C) is an assessment designed to help nonprofits build the foundation to foster more racially equitable workplaces. The BB4C framework equips organizations with the insights to understand their culture and build more aligned teams. Organizations receive access to an anonymized digital survey, custom reports, and robust resources to accelerate their development and more effectively meet the needs of the communities they serve.

BB4C assesses staff experiences through the lens of four key Capacities—learning, leadership, conversation, and voice—that are fundamental for organizations engaging in race equity efforts.

Why Building Movement Project Created BB4C

Building Movement Project developed BB4C to invest in capacity building at organizations with racial equity as a key pillar for broader organizational strategic planning to achieve the mission of their community-oriented work.

Who is Building Blocks for Change for?

BB4C is an assessment designed for US-based nonprofit organizations that want to foster racially equitable workplaces, and need expert-tested recommendations on where and how to start. Consultants in organizational development, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), or other related areas can also use BB4C as a tool to support their clients. At this time, the assessment process is not recommended for nonprofit board members, philanthropic organizations, or government agencies.

  • “BB4C is a very high quality assessment and the report doubles down on the quality of the assessment. It has been transformational for our organization.”

    — Director of Mission and Impact at a fundraising organization

  • “It was a much more organized and helpful process than we got from other facilitators. A lot of thought has gone into how you frame the work, and how you share it with the team. And having specific next steps and places to go for more ideas about each of them was incredibly useful.”

    — Deputy Director of an education policy organization

  • "(BB4C) added so much efficiency and a very quick turnaround, which meant that I could hit the ground running with the clients I was supporting from day one. The findings weren't just speculation or subjective takeaways. It was research based. It was backed by research, best practices, and so I felt really comfortable implementing it into my practice."
